A benign tumor means that there is an abnormal growth that is not cancerous, or malignant.
Cancers, or malignant tumors, can spread to different parts of the body. Bone cancers will often begin in the arm or leg, and spread to organs such as the lung, brain, liver, or elsewhere.
While benign tumors can cause local tissue damage, they will not spread elsewhere. Benign bone tumors usually cause problems by weakening bone.
This can lead to a so-called 'pathologic fracture,' a fracture that breaks through a weakened bone.
