- 1). Make sure you have the proper equipment. The bare minimum you should have is a DJ mixer. This way, you can fade in and out between two tracks with ease. Purchase a digital audio workstation as well to remix tracks and to create mixes. A digital audio workstation allows you to edit audio and record your own audio, which is essential to remixing a track. Ableton Live 8 is an excellent digital audio workstation that allows you to remix tracks and also create DJ sets.
- 2). Hook up your DJ mixer to your computer and open your digital audio workstation. If the DJ mixer is connected via USB or MIDI, it will be automatically detected. If you are intending to remix a song, drag the song into an empty clip in your digital audio workstation. To do this in Ableton Live 8, for example, drag the track into an empty clip in the column labeled "Audio."
- 3). Use effects within the digital audio workstation to manipulate the track. Many DJs like to do mashups, which are two different tracks combined into one track. You can drag as many different tracks as you like into your digital audio workstation.
- 4). On your DJ mixer, be sure to use the equalizer knobs. The equalizer can cut or boost frequencies in your mix. There are three knobs on your DJ mixer. These knobs are titled bass, mids and treble. The bass knob controls low-end frequencies, the mids knob controls midrange frequencies and the treble knob controls high-end frequencies. Turn one of these knobs all the way to the left in order to cut out a certain frequency or all the way to the right to boost that frequency. Use the equalizer to cut unwanted frequencies or boost frequencies that are too quiet.
- 5). Press "Play" to hear your remix/mashup. Once you are satisfied, save your track as an MP3. In Ableton Live 8, click "File and export." Select "MP3" from the drop-down box.
- 6). Create an artist profile on MySpace.com. MySpace is a great way to network and to promote your music. Once you have successfully created an account, click "Edit profile" and click the "Music manager" tab. Here, you can upload the track you have just created.
- 7). Promote your MySpace account. You can see how many people have visited your page by checking the number next to "Profile Views" right underneath your main profile picture.
