How to Pick a Walking Shoe As Part of Your Plantar Fasciitis Treatment

If you've been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis by your doctor you have probably already started lots of stretches, possibly physical therapy and you're now in the market for a new pair of walking shoes.
If you haven't been officially diagnosed with plantar fasciitis but are experiencing heel pain that seems to come from underneath your heel (on the bottom of your foot), you are probably just starting a list of home remedies to help deal with your pain and are also in the market for a new pair of shoes.
Plantar fasciitis is a swelling of the tissue (fascia) at the bottom of your foot (plantar) and is often caused from too much running, exercising and jumping.
While you're giving yourself a break from strenuous exercise you should find a pair of walking shoes that are specially designed to be part of your plantar fasciitis treatment.
Here are three suggestions to help you find the best walking shoes as part of your plantar fasciitis treatment:
  1. Know your foot.
Where do your shoes wear out first? When you look at your shoe from the back does the heel look more worn out on the outside or the inside? Do you flatten out the arches? What kind of arch do you have? You will need to go to a specialty store as you start the search for the right shoe, but a knowledgeable salesperson will know what brands and makes are the best for your foot.
The first rule of shopping for a walking shoe is that there is no "best" shoe for everyone.
Find the shoe the fits you best and makes up for the way you wear out shoes
  2. Look for a walking shoe with a snug fit everywhere but that also isn't too tight anywhere.
The shoe should have a flexible sole and room enough for you to wiggle your toes.
  3. Change your shopping attitude.
This is a process that is going to take a while.
You are going to have to try on at least 4 pair of walking shoes and you'll have to walk around in each of those.
    Dedicate the time.
Try walking down an incline while you're testing them out.
When you walk down an incline fully laced into your shoes your toe shouldn't touch the front of the shoe (at least not when you buy it-it will loosen up a little as you wear it but if your shoe hits your toe from the get go the shoe is too tight).
Try taking stairs two a time while you're test driving your shoes.
If your heel lifts up more than 1/8 of an inch out of the heel when you step, the shoes don't fit and they will give you terrible blisters.
Making sure that you have the best walking shoes can be part of your plantar fasciitis treatment.
