- Consult the USDA's hardiness zone map to better understand how climate affects planting in your area. Cool season veggies such as lettuce, broccoli, kale and greens can be planted in late April while warm season veggies such as tomatoes, melons, peppers, beans and cucumbers need to wait until the danger of frost has passed by mid-to-late May, depending on the growing zone.
- While Ohio's soil is nutrient-rich, large sections of the state sit on hard clay. Have your soil tested by your local cooperative extension office each spring before planting to determine how best to amend it to help break up any clay deposits.
- Ohio's three-season growing season means plenty of options for growing vegetables if timed correctly. Plant cool season plants in April, harvest at the end of May and replace with warm season selections. Once those are ready for picking, another round of cool-season plants can be planted to grow into fall.
