- Darvon contains one drug, propoxyphene. Lortab is a combination drug that contains two pain relievers, hydrocodone bitrartrate and acetaminophen.
- Darvon works by blocking the electrical conduction of nerve cells by sodium, which prevents pain signals from reaching your brain. Lortab works directly upon your brain to reduce the sensations of pain and lower-body temperature.
- Because of the way Lortab works, it also alleviates fever and prevents coughing. Darvon only reduces pain.
- When combined with the anticonvulsant drug carbamazepine, Darvon poses a risk for serious side effects, including coma, RxList.com reports. Lortab does not interact with carbamazepine.
- Darvon is not approved for use in people who have severe asthma, paralysis of the intestines or elevated levels of carbon dioxide in their blood. Lortab has no such restrictions on its use, according to RxList.com.
