- 1). Note the folding technique of the current fabric on the underside of the chair, as you'll want to use a similar style when replacing the fabric. Pull out the staples that are attaching the fabric to the frame, using needle nose pliers or a heavy-duty staple remover. Pull off the fabric, making an attempt to keep the fabric intact so you can use it as a pattern for the new cover.
- 2). Use a tape measure to measure the thickness of the padding at its thickest point. Since your padding is likely most worn out in the middle, measure the padding at one of the sides. Also measure the width and length of the padding, then pull it off the seat frame.
- 3). Purchase padding of equal thickness as your old piece and have it cut to the size of your seat. Purchase upholstery fabric that is the same or similar to the rest of the chair, and have it cut to the size of the old piece. Be sure to use upholstery fabric, as it will be thicker and more durable than other fabrics.
- 4). Use industrial glue to attach your new piece of padding to the frame of your seat.
- 5). Cut or sew your new fabric to match the old fabric configuration. This may involve sewing several pieces of fabric together. As an alternative, you could purchase a bucket seat cover already made that simply pulls over the padding and is secured with a drawstring under the seat. If you do that, you won't need to follow any of the steps that follow this one; simply pull the pre-made cover over the new padding and tighten the drawstring.
- 6). Test your fabric's position over the padding. Once you have your fabric in a suitable position, lift it up and spray adhesive onto the padding, then place your fabric onto the spray adhesive to adhere the padding to the fabric.
- 7). Pull the fabric around the edges of the frame, taking care to pull the fabric tight. Staple the fabric to the frame, using at least as many staples as you removed. Let the chair sit for a few hours to allow the glue to dry.
