- Employment of nurses is expected to increase by 21 percent during the 2008 to 2018 decade, the BLS reported, with more than three million workers employed as nurses in May 2008. According to PayScale.com, nurses earned anywhere from $10.52 to more than $20 per hour in March 2010.
- Nearly 2.3 million workers were employed as physicians in May 2008, according to the BLS. They are expected to experience a job growth of 34 percent from 2008 to 2018. Physicians are also among the highest earners in the country, with PayScale.com reporting a median yearly salary up to $207,000 in March 2010.
- Jobs for home health care workers will practically double during the 200 to 2018 decade, as the BLS projected a growth of 46 percent, or more than any other American occupation. Home health care workers held 958,000 jobs in May 2008, according to the BLS. They earned anywhere from $53,000 to more than $74,000 in March 2010, PayScale.com reported.
- More than 818,000 workers were employed as dentists in May 2008, with the BLS reporting an expected job growth of 28.5 percent from 2008 to 2018. As for earnings, PayScale.com reported dentists ranked up there with physicians in March 2010, making anywhere from nearly $80,000 to nearly $193,000 per year.
- Employment of paramedics and emergency medical technicians is expected to grow at a slower rate than other jobs in the medical industry, at just nine percent, according to the BLS. That is actually slower than all occupations combined. Paramedics and EMTs earned anywhere from $9.81 to more than $20 per hour, according to PayScale.com.
- According to the BLS, jobs for outpatient care workers are expected to increase by 38.6 percent, while those for employees of medical labs are projected to grow by 39.8 percent. Outpatient care workers perform duties such as physical therapy for patients at a patient's home. Those listed as "other" health workers by the BLS, such as x-ray technicians, information clerks and medical assistants, are expected to see their jobs increase by 41.3 percent during the 2008 to 2018 decade.
