- 1). Cut the sealant from the edges of the window frame with a utility knife. Use a putty knife to pry it from the seams, and peel the remainder with needle nose pliers if necessary.
- 2). Inspect the exposed seams in the frame for any visible dirt or loose debris. Clean with a damp rag to ensure that there are no contaminants that could trap air between the frame and the new sealant.
- 3). Use the utility knife to create an opening in the nozzle on a tube of silicone caulk. Cut the tip to allow a bead of sealant no more than 1/4 inch thick. Load the tube into a caulking gun.
- 4). Align the tip of the caulking gun with the joint in the window frame where you removed the old seal. Draw it along the length of the seam as you apply steady pressure to the trigger.
- 5). Smooth the silicone with a thin, flat tool once you've applied an even seal. Repeat this process for each side of the window frame, and allow the sealant to cure over a 24-hour period.
