I am old fashioned at heart when it comes to holiday as nothing beats country walks in the English countryside and my county of choice; Rutland.
I have worked for many Rutland Hotels as a boy, giving me the opportunity to earn some pocket money whilst at school, and often I thought that of all the places to go for a getaway weekend, why Rutland? Since leaving the county and no longer working for the fore-mentioned Rutland hotels I have come to appreciate what was in front of my eyes all along; open fields, fresh air and a multifunctional nature reserve in the form of Rutland Water.
I only came to realise this a couple of weeks ago as my friend, who works for Rutland Cycling, took me out for a ride around Rutland Water reservoir and despite being cold, it was an enjoyable experience as the surrounding were a site to behold.
There are many others I'm sure that will be in a similar boat to me, looking for a long weekend away in the country and would appreciate a check list of things to do, where to go, and the kind of hotels available.
So here it is, my take on the 'root' county and the things to do.
Rutland Hotels- I'm not going to plug a particular hotel, yet I recommend scouting the internet for 'country Rutland Hotels' and you will be generated with several converted barns that are now lodges and offer a country feel to proceedings; a must for a relaxing weekend away in the country.
Rutland Water- the most famous landmark in the smallest county in the United Kingdom.
The largest reservoir in the UK and habitats a large nature reserve along with having a number of trails for walking or cycling and has a water sports centre, golf course and numerous restaurants.
If you're coming to Rutland, then you'll be going to Rutland Water! Falconry Centre- Rutland Falconry and Owl Centre is set in 42 acres of unspoilt woodland and has beautiful views over Rutland Water.
There are over 90 birds on site, including owls, hawks, falcons, buzzards and even vultures.
Go and handle some falcons, very impressive creatures.
Climbing- ever thought about trying a family climbing activity? Well, have a go on the RockBlok! Suitable for ages 7 and over and is a great afternoon filler.
For a weekend away, one of those activities alone would take up the majority of the day as with Rutland Water, there are a variety of activities that would keep you entertained.
