Printemps department store first opened its doors in 1865. This was an era when the idea of a one-stop shopping destination was still new, as was the growing middle glass that had unprecedented buying power to enjoy the department store concept.
An elegant example of Art Nouveau architecture, Printemps continues to grace the bustling Boulevard Haussmann with its striking glass cupola, built in the 1930s as part of a World Exhibition.
In 1975, the store was registered as a historic monument by the French government. Even if shopping isn't your thing, a visit to Printemps (and neighboring Galeries Lafayette) can be a memorable experience and a veritable portal into nineteenth-century Parisian history and design.
