If you are from Britain and hear the names Katie Hopkins and Stuart Baggs (the brand), what do you think of? Yes, the Apprentice, and as you will know they are all past competitors in Lord Sugar's search for his next trainee.
What singles these people out from the other seventy or eighty who have also tried to win that prized job, is that they all became celebrities as a result of being on the programme.
As another sixteen hopefuls compete against one another to win the prized position, nobody knows which of them will be remembered, or which will go on to appear in some other reality programme or another and which will fade into obscurity.
Interestingly enough the winner often falls into the latter category, and is rarely heard of again, until they leave the venerable Lord's employ and go on to bigger and better things, running their own website dedicated to helping others.
One always wonders where they get the money from to be so philanthropic.
The point is, if it is fame you seek, then this is one way you can go about achieving it.
If you are fortunate enough to last through to round seven or eight the chances are you will have had sufficient air time to have made some sort of impression on the viewers and as such you will be better placed to do something outrageous to be remembered.
Success on one reality show often leads to multiple appearances on others.
At least both of those mentioned at the beginning of this article have appeared on Come Dine With Me, and on Coach Trip as well.
The same can be said for Big Brother which also has a similar effect on the public psyche, although I doubt Lord Sugar would appreciate that observation.
However, here again if you can get through the first few weeks you have every opportunity to make a complete fool of yourself on national television and as such qualify for minor celebrity status.
There can be little doubt that the makers of Celebrity Big Bro knew exactly what they were doing when they put a complete unknown into one of their series and she went on to win it outright.
This then propelled her to fame and fortune in her own right.
Was that a self-fulfilling prophecy, or the producers taking a pop at the whole celebrity culture? You decide!
