What is a Caregiver"s Role in Reporting Suspected Child Abuse?

Question: What is a Caregiver's Role in Reporting Suspected Child Abuse?

What is the responsibility of caregivers in reporting suspected child abuse or neglect?

Answer:

Child care providers are "mandated reporters" of child abuse. This means they are required by law to report any suspected incidents of physical, sexual or emotional abuse, and neglect. Each state designates indivudals, typically by professional groups, who are mandated by law to report any type of suspected abuse.

Individuals typically designated as mandatory reporters are those who have frequent/regular contact with children. These groups typically include:
  • Child care providers
  • School personnel
  • Health care workers
  • Social workers
  • Law enforcement officials
  • Mental health professionals
Some states also mandate other classifications of workers, such as firefighters. Any person, however, may report incidents of abuse or neglect. Individuals should view specific state requirements.

In addition, if parents suspect child abuse or neglect in their child's child care program, they should call their state's Child Abuse Hotline.
