FPS Skills: Weapon Choice

Your choice of weapon in a game will influence how effective a player you are during a match.
Certain weapons are designed for certain things, and using a weapon which compliments your playing style will certainly help you to rack up the points! You'll find that most, if not all games have the same "categories" of weapons.
In a game you'll usually find a weapon which is what I like to call an "Assault" class of weapon.
This is a gun which is a jack of all trades, a good all rounder.
Usually these have a decent rate of fire and good accuracy over medium distances.
Because of their versatility, they are generally the type of gun which is used most often.
Another of the old faithful guns is the "Sidearm" or "Pistol" style of gun.
These are usually small, relatively weak guns which are used as a backup to your main gun.
They generally don't do much damage and are often used as a last resort if you run out of ammo for your main gun, however, they are very accurate over a short distance and can still be the difference between winning or losing a gunfight.
Some of the more realistic shooter games have an "SMG" gun, a submachine gun.
These are essentially smaller versions the Assault class of weapon, they are physically smaller guns which have good accuracy at short to mid distances.
They are less powerful but more than capable in close quarters gunfights due to their accuracy.
Another one of the common weapons you'll see is a "Sniper" style of gun.
These are guns designed for accurate, long range shooting and normally have enough power to drop an enemy with 1 or 2 bullets.
Sniper guns generally, but not always, have a slow rate of fire and a small capacity.
By that I mean you only get about 5 shots before you need to reload.
Some games contain a "Shotgun" style of weapon which is usually devastating at short range, usually a one shot kill.
This is a very effective weapon if you're an aggressive player however you do need to be very close to your target for this gun to do its job, if you're not within touching distance then the gun won't do much damage and any further than that pretty much renders the gun useless! Then of course you usually have a "Heavy" style of weapon.
These usually have a high rate of fire and a large capacity and are designed to do a lot of damage very quickly! The problem with this awesome firepower is that these types of guns are usually less accurate, they are slow to reload and in some cases because of the size and weight of the gun, cause your character to move slower when holding the gun.
In a lot of games now you have what I like to call a "Power Weapon".
These are usually heavy weapons which have a very slow rate of fire but to make up for it, have a devastating effect if they hit their target.
Usually these are used to take out vehicles or multiple enemies with one shot.
An example of this would be a rocket launcher of some sort.
Some games allow you to call in a special attack such as an airstrike which can be considered a power weapon as well.
Of course, you don't get the same gun in each game but you'll find that the weapons which are available to you will often fall into one of these categories.
Choosing a weapon which suits the map or your style of playing can really enhance your effectiveness and help you score more points.
