How to Convert a Cassette Tape to a Sony MP3 Player

    Getting Music Onto Computer

    • 1). Find the soundcard on the back of your computer and look for the "Line In" input. Plug one end of your cable with double-sided 1/8" jacks into the Line In input. If the Line In input is not labeled, choose the blue input on your soundcard.

    • 2). Connect the other end of your cable with double-sided 1/8" jacks into the headphone output of your cassette player. Put your cassette into the player and cue it to the spot where you want to begin recording.

    • 3). Download a music editing program like AV Music Morph Gold, Audacity, or Audio Editor Pro from the links listed below in the Resource section. When you're finished downloading, open the program and click the "Record" button. The "Recorder" dialog will appear.

    • 4). Make sure your computer's record source is set to "Line in." Press the "Record" button in your music editing software and press the "Play" button on your cassette player. Press the "Record" button again after each song to stop the recording if you wish your songs to be saved individually.

    • 5). Convert your recordings to an MP3 file by going to "Save As" in your music editing software and selecting the MP3 audio format. (If you are using Audacity, make sure that you download the LAME encoder linked below in the Resource section, so you can save your files as MP3s.) Press "Save," then repeat the last two steps until you have recorded all the songs on your cassette. Make sure you save these in your computer's default music folder so the songs are recognized in Windows Media Player.

From Computer to Sony MP3 Player

    • 1). Connect your USB cable to your computer's and Sony MP3 player's USB ports. Go to your computer and open Windows Media Player.

    • 2). Click the "Sync" button in the upper right corner of Media Player. Make sure it recognizes that your Sony MP3 player is connected to the computer.

    • 3). Click once on the songs you want to transfer to your Sony MP3 player. To select more than one song at a time, hold down the "Ctrl" key while you click on the songs. Drag the songs with your mouse to the Sync pane.

    • 4). Click the "Start Sync" button to begin transferring your songs to your Sony MP3 player. When the transfer is finished, disconnect the USB cable from your computer and Sony MP3 player. Close Media Player, turn on your Sony MP3 player, and enjoy the music.
