MTV Unplugged: Los Tigres del Norte and Friends is one of the most important albums of the year. This work marks the first time ever Regional Mexican music is featured in an unplugged production. The 12 tracks on this album, which was recorded on February 2011 at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, include some of the greatest hits produced by the band throughout its music career.
MTV Unplugged: Los Tigres del Norte and Friends features a group of outstanding Latin music artists including Paulina Rubio, Juanes , Andres Calamaro, Diego Torres, Zach de la Rocha and Calle 13.
Despite some controversy about bringing mainstream artists, MTV Unplugged: Los Tigres del Norte and Friends is a very nice album that proves once again why Los Tigres del Norte are the kings of Norteno music.
An Introduction of Corrido Songs
The first thing one notices from this album is the amazing energy coming from the audience. This lively atmosphere is enhaced from the very beginning thanks to the opening Corrido tracks ("Jefe De Jefes" and "Contrabando Y Traicion") that introduce MTV Unplugged: Los Tigres del Norte and Friends.
After getting the crowd excited, Los Tigres del Norte play a softer melody featuring the first guest on this album. Mexican Pop star Paulina Rubio joins the band to sing "Golpes En El Corazon," one of the most pleasant singles from the MTV Unplugged: Los Tigres del Norte and Friends album.
A Collection of Hits and Stars
After "Golpes En El Corazon," MTV Unplugged: Los Tigres del Norte and Friends brings some of the most enduring singles ever produced by the band such as "Lagrimas Del Corazon," "La Puerta Negra" and "La Jaula De Oro," a song featuring Latin Pop sensation Juanes.
The song with the Colombian superstar is, in fact, one of the best tracks and guest performances in the whole album.
Argentinian artists Diego Torres and Andres Calamaro are featured in the singles "Mi Buena Suerte," "La Mesa Del Rincon" and "Quiero Volar Contigo." Diego Torres creates an interesting voice contrast with Hernan Hernandez in the single "Mi Buena Suerte" while Andres Calamaro adds his own special touch to the single "La Mesa Del Rincon" with a Tango introduction.
Latin American Pride
A couple of famous Rap artists are also part of the MTV Unplugged: Los Tigres del Norte and Friends album. Zach de la Rocha from Rage Against the Machine and Rene from Calle 13 are featured in two songs ("Somos Mas Americanos" and "America") that speak up about Latin American roots and pride.
MTV Unplugged: Los Tigres del Norte and Friends ends with the same intensity it starts. "America," the vibrant single featuring Rene from Calle 13, offers music that is nicely marked by Hernan Hernadez's bass bringing the party with Los Tigres to an exciting end. Along the music, Rene incorporates an irreverent flow that strongly deals with Latino pride.
‘MTV Unplugged Los Tigres del Norte and Friends’ – Bottom Line
Overall, MTV Unplugged: Los Tigres del Norte and Friends is a very nice work that will probably allow Regional Mexican music to gain further attention from people who are not that much into this kind of genre. The lineup of guests and the clean sound that surrounds this album is both refreshing and enjoyable. This first time ever unplugged experience is definitely a good one for Los Tigres del Norte and Norteno music as a whole.
