- 1). Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug on the Stihl trimmer to prevent accidental starting. Place the trimmer on a flat surface for convenient access to the trimmer head.
- 2). Remove the spool from the trimmer head by pushing in on the button on the bottom of the trimmer head and turning it to the side. Pull the spool from the Stihl trimmer head.
- 3). Remove any remaining trimmer line from the spool and dispose of it properly. Refer to the owner's manual for the specific diameter of trimmer line your particular Stihl trimmer model uses. Stihl trimmers use line that ranges from 0.065 inch to 0.130 inch in diameter.
- 4). Cut two lengths of trimmer line from a filler spool with scissors. As a rule of thumb, cut the line 15 feet long and refer to the owner's manual for specific line lengths.
- 5). Insert the end of one length of line into the hole in the side of the trimmer spool on the bottom half of the spool. Wind the line securely around the spool, leaving 6 inches of line extending from the spool. Clip the 6-inch length of line into the clip on the side of the spool. Wind the line around the spool in the direction indicated by the arrow on the spool.
- 6). Repeat the process for winding the second length of trimmer line onto the top half of the spool. Wind the line in the direction as indicated by the arrow on the spool and clip the last 6 inches of line in the clip on the side of the spool.
- 7). Feed the ends of the line extending from the spool through the holes in the side of the trimmer head. Attach the spool to the trimmer head by pushing it straight in and turning to lock it in place.
