Congress Street Bridge in Austin is home to one of Texas' most interesting and educational and free attractions, an urban bat colony. Close to many popular hotels for tourists, the Austin bats entertain visitors nightly from August to October with their migration into the night for feeding. Thought to be more than 1.5 million strong, the bats can be viewed from a blanket on the grass, or you can take a boat cruise to see them sweeping over the water. Some of the local hotels also offer viewing areas, so plan ahead to get a look at one of nature's most fascinating processes with a much-misunderstood creature.

This historic ruin greets millions of people a year who want to learn more about the Old West or honor the battle that defined the southern town of San Antonio. The battle occurred in 1836 and sums up the Texan attitude of pride, loyalty and the fight for liberty. Visitors can learn much about the Alamo Defenders, who held out the Centralist Army of Gen. Lopez de Santa Anna for 13 days in 1836. Historic figures such as Davy Crockett and William Travis were part of this fated battle, and tourists can learn more about the politics of the area as well as 19th-century life in the Wild West. The Old Church is home to artifacts from some of the heroes of the Alamo battle, including a ring from Travis and Crockett's famous buckskin vest. The Alamo Gardens is a peaceful place to reflect on the cost of war and the price of liberty.
