- 1). Remove items from the basement that can absorb dampness and odor, such as wood, cloth and cardboard. Replace cardboard boxes with plastic storage containers.
- 2). Increase ventilation if possible. Open ventilation windows if there are any. Open them on opposite sides so that there will be a cross wind.
- 3). Add moisture absorbing packs to the basement area to pull moisture out of the air. If you have access to power, plug in a dehumidifier to pull moisture out.
- 4). Cover the dirt floor with a sheet of plastic. Cover from end to end to prevent moisture in the ground from getting into the air.
