What is a boot sector virus? This kind of infection is one that infects the first sector, i.e. the boot sector, of a floppy disk or hard drive. Viruses can also infect the MBR. The first PC virus in the wild was Brain, a boot sector virus that exhibited stealth techniques to avoid detection. Brain also changed the volume label of the disk drive.

How to avoid "boot sector" viruses. Commonly, infected floppies and subsequent boot sector infections result from "shared" diskettes and pirated software applications. It is relatively easy to avoid these viruses. Most are spread when users inadvertently leave floppy disks in the drive - which happen to be infected with a boot sector virus. The next time they boot up their PC, the virus infects the local drive. Most systems allow users to change the boot sequence so that the system always attempts to boot first from the local hard drive (C:\) or CD-ROM drive.

Disinfecting boot sector viruses. Boot sector repair is best accomplished by the use of antivirus software. Because some boot sector viruses encrypt the MBR, improper removal can result in a drive that is inaccessible. However, if you are certain the virus has only affected the boot sector and is not an encrypting virus, the DOS SYS command can be used to restore the first sector. Additionally, the DOS LABEL command can be used to restore a damaged volume label and FDISK /MBR will replace the MBR. None of these methods is recommended, however. Antivirus software remains the best tool for cleanly and accuarately removing boot sector viruses with minimal threat to data and files.

A boot virus infects the boot sector of a floppy disk, and may infect either the boot sector of the hard disk, the master sector of the hard disk, or neither. (Some viruses, such as Brain, only infect floppy disks.)

The boot sector of a floppy is located on the top of the diskette (side 0), the outside cylinder (cylinder 0), and the first sector (sector 1). In this sector you will normally find code called the boot record. A boot record is created whenever a disk is formatted (with FORMAT), regardless of the switches used. It is re-written whenever the disk is SYS'ed (with SYS). When a machine boots from a floppy disk, the heads of the drive automatically seek to cylinder 0. Then the controller tells the heads of the drive to read the code located on side 0, cylinder 0, sector 1. When the program in the sector is read, the code contained in it is executed. The code might be a healthy boot sector, and the boot continues. Or it might be a virus, which will execute, have its way with your computer, then transfer the computer to read the sector on the floppy where it has moved the original boot record.

Before you Clean a Boot Virus, Back it Up

Note: the advice in this section was inspired by my repeated observation of the failure of some products. MSAV and CPAV damaged floppies that it tried to remove Form from. McAfee's CLEAN v. 100 damaged hard disks that it tried to remove Michelangelo from...

Solution

Take out the Windows XP CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your PC.
Assuming that a corrupt master boot record was your only issue, Windows XP should now start .
