UK family visas: fiancée visa

In most English-speaking countries, immigration laws and regulations allow qualifying citizens to bring immediate family members to their home country on immigrant, otherwise known as settlement, visas. The visa holder is granted the privilege of living and working in sponsor’s country on a permanent basis.

UK immigration policies are friendly toward family immigrants and there is a variety of visa options available to British citizens and lawful permanent residents that they can choose from in order to bring their loved ones to the UK. If you are an eligible British citizen or a permanent resident of the UK with no restrictions on your stay (e.g. an indefinite leave to remain or right of abode holder), you can use one of the following visa options to obtain permission for your partner to immigrate to the UK:
1.    UK prospective marriage or fiancée visa;
2.    UK proposed civil partner visa;
3.    UK spouse or marriage visa;
4.    UK civil partnership visa;
5.    UK de facto partner visa;
6.    UK same-sex partner visa;
7.    EEA family permit (restrictions apply);
In most instances, British citizens and permanent residents bring their prospective spouses to the UK on a settlement-class fiancée visa in order to be able to get married in the presence of family and friends in the UK. Prior to travelling to the UK, however, your fiancée is required to obtain permission to enter the UK, called entry clearance or a visa, even if she or he does not require a visa for entry into the UK as a visitor.

Fiancée visa applications are processed by the British Consulates, Embassies and High Commissions outside of the UK. Your fiancée must submit her application to the appropriate UK visa-issuing post with jurisdiction over her place of normal and legal residence. You must allow adequate time for your visa application to be processed by the examining officials. It is not advisable that you make any urgent travel plans prior to filing your application as there is no guarantee when your fiancée’s settlement visa will be issued. The processing times for UK settlement visa applications vary, but generally within around one to three months.
