Three Orchids Pots: How To Choose The Right One For Your Plant

A lot of factors are involved in successful orchid growing, and choosing the right orchid pot is one. Orchid growers utilize three different kinds of orchids pots: basket, plastic and clay or terra cotta. Lets go into detail on each pot to determine the right one for your plant.

Basket

For those who enjoy designing and making their home even more beautiful, basket orchids pots are the way to go. They can be placed in your garden, inside your home and even hungthe possibilities are endless. Take note though that not all orchids thrive in a basket.

Baskets are recommended for orchids that have long, heavy roots and grow pendant flowers like Gongora, Acineta and Stanhopea. This type of orchid pot allows air to circulate in the roots, which results in the tendency to dry quickly. In using baskets, make sure to observe your plants for dryness so you can water accordingly.

Plastic

For those planning on growing orchids indoors, a plastic orchid pot is a good choice. Plastic is lightweight, and can easily be cleaned with bleach so it can be reused. Because plastic is not made of porous material, it has a tendency to retain moisture. This is why you should use it for orchids that enjoy being damp, like moth orchids.

These orchids pots do not have drainage holes, so make sure to drill a few so that water can drain well. A good plastic pot is one that is sturdy, thick and doesnt heat up easily. To help increase sun exposure to the roots, get one that is clear. This is also helpful in checking the roots for any damage.

Clay or Terra Cotta

Clay or terra cotta orchids pots are great for outdoor gardening because theyre heavy and more stable, which means theyre not easily knocked over by an animal or a gust of wind. Because clay is made of porous material, water evaporates faster, so theyre great for orchids that enjoy being more dry than wet. Since most of these pots only have one drainage hole, make sure to put rocks or pebbles at the bottom, so the water can drain well.

In choosing the orchid pot youre going use, its important to match the right one with the orchid variety you have as well as the conditions of where youre planning to place to plant. Truly, orchid lovers will enjoy matching the orchid they have with the right container, as well as utilizing other measures to make their plant thrive. Learning all that you can and achieving the right balance will ensure that your orchids will grow beautifully and vibrantly.
