- 1). Apply for a federal Employee Identification Number (or "EIN") by visiting the IRS website and downloading and completing Form SS-4, the EIN application form. Your state will require an EIN to appear on your Articles of Incorporation. You may also complete the application form online.
- 2). Visit the website for your Secretary of State Office to request or download an incorporation packet. The packet will include the original Articles of Incorporation you'll need as well as detailed instructions on completing your filing and other business filing requirements that may be unique to your state. A national list of Secretaries of State Office websites appears in the Resources section.
- 3). Complete the Articles of Incorporation with your company's name, EIN number, purpose and corporate officers. Copy all of your filing documents for your records and return the originals with the filing fee to your Secretary of State's Office. (The fee required for your filing varies from state to state but will be included in your incorporation packet.)
