Understanding Why Corrective Jaw Surgery is Performed

The term corrective jaw surgery can be perform for the following reasons. Difficulty in chewing, difficulty in swallowing, chronic jaw or jaw join pain and headache, excessive wear of the teeth, open bite (space between the upper and the lower teeth when the mouth is closed), unbalanced facial appearance from the front, or side, facial injury or birth defects, receding chin, protruding jaw, inability to make the lips meet without straining, chronic mouth breathing and dry mouth and sleep apnea Jaw surgery comes as a result of difficulty in chewing or biting food, difficulty in (breathing problems when sleeping, including snoring).

Corrective jaw surgery gives you a better smile on your face. With the help of Oral surgeons and Maxillofacial Surgeons to correct the above cases will lead to improvement in chewing, speaking and breathing. The appearance of the patients can be corrected as a result of their surgery. Dentists, orthodontist and oral surgeons and maxillofacial surgeons work together to determine if the patient is a candidate for corrective jaw surgery. The oral and maxillofacial surgeon determines which corrective jaw surgical procedure is needed and performs the actual surgery. Corrective jaw surgery goes to reposition all or parts of the upper and lower jaw and chin. The surgery may involve one or two jaws during the same procedure. This is done by making cuts in the bones of the mandible and repositioning the cut pieces in the desires alignment. The surgery does not involve cutting the skin instead the surgeons usually go through the inside of the mouth to perform the procedure.

After the corrective surgery has been performed, the patients are often required to consume liquid diet. After some time soft diet can be introduced follow by hard food. It is very important to watch your diet after surgery to facilitate the healing process. There can be weight loss due to lack of appetite and the liquid diet is common should be avoided if possible. The recovery time ranges from few weeks for minor surgeries up to a year for more complicated surgeries. Pain may be minimal for some cases due to damage in nerve and some loss of feelings. In this case the doctor will prescribe pain medication for the patient. The surgeon visits the patient frequently to check on the healing process, check the infection and to see if there has been any movement to the corrected part of the jaw.
