The layout of the city, its places of worship, old Chinese architectural feats, and quaint little eateries are the most explored areas as they are what afford the insight to vibrant ancient Chinese culture. One of the old city's most explored is the Huxinting Tea House. Located in the middle of an artificial lake the structure which houses the Tea House was originally a pavilion on this lake. Both the pavilion and the lake had been part of the Ming Dynasty's Yu Garden, a garden built by one of the officials of this Dynasty known as Pan Yunduan.
The pavilion had originally been named the ‘Fuyi Pavilion', and its purpose and ownership changed hands several times with the change of dynasties. During the 18th century under reign of the Qianlong Emperor the structure was used as a meeting place for the textile traders and was known as the ‘Mid-Lake Pavilion'. It was during the 19th century under the rule of the Emperor Xian Feng that the structure was first used as a proper teahouse, known first as ‘Yeshi' and then as ‘Wanzai'. It is the oldest functioning tea house in this city.
