Establish a budget for your purchase to help narrow down the selection of safety toy boxes. - 2). Visit a local retailer or online distributor to browse the available styles of toy boxes. Select the type of material that you want the toy box to be constructed from. Both wood and plastic are readily-available, safety-minded options. Focus on products with lightweight lids that will not harm a child if they were to fall on his head or fingers. Test the toy boxes to see if the lids have self-locking mechanisms on the hinges that keep the lid in place once it has been opened.
- 3). Avoid toy boxes with locks or latches on the lids. Entrapment caused by locked lids can lead to death from suffocation. Look for toy boxes that feature cut-outs or other ventilation holes to ensure a sufficient air supply in case children do become trapped inside. If you do purchase a toy box with a latching lid, remove the lid or latching mechanism.
- 4). Buy a toy box that has been painted or stained by the manufacturer using a nontoxic finish. Purchase your own nontoxic, child-safe paint or stain if you will be finishing a raw wood toy box yourself.
- 5). Buy a toy box without any sharp edges. Ideally, all of the toy box's corners should be rounded or covered with a soft material so children won't be injured if they accidentally run into the toy box.
