- 1). Paint the wood paneling. A coat of solid paint can do a lot to update the look. Create an accent wall with a different color or make it monochromatic. You can also create a striped wall by painting the panels one color and the recesses another. Before you paint, fill any cracks, holes or damage with wood filler. Then sand the surface with fine sandpaper to roughen it before applying primer, followed by a top coat.
- 2). Hang pictures on the wall. A collection of smaller framed pictures hung all over the wall provide depth and interest. For a bolder look, have your favorite high resolution image blown up large enough to cover most of the wall. Have it framed or laminated and fasten it to the wall with spray adhesive or double-sided tape.
- 3). Hang wallpaper. If you're feeling really creative, hang it over the panels and skip the grooves. To hide the grooves altogether, hang heavyweight wallpaper horizontally, not vertically. Stick with the heavyweight or hang a decorative paper vertically over it. Or choose a roughened wallpaper designed to be painted. Then paint this second layer to hide the paneling altogether.
- 4). Hang knick knacks on the wall. Wall flower vases, plates, other ceramics or crafts look beautiful when hung en masse. Align them along the panels or stagger them for added visual interest.
