Why I Play the Piano!

How many of us remember the day that our mothers decided we should learn to play the piano? The time spent in the afternoons practicing, instead of outside playing with our friends.
We hated it.
However, for some of us, we kept at it and now I can say that we know how to play the piano.
I feel that there is no other sound that can come from an instrument that is as truly beautiful as that of the piano.
Once I learned how to play the piano, not only was my mother very happy but I was happy as well in the fact that she gave me one of the greatest possible gifts, the opportunity for me to learn how to play my favorite tunes on the piano.
Since I am much older now, I truly understand my mother's insistence in bringing music into my life.
Quite simply, there is no greater joy than having the ability to make or play music, and because I have learned the art of the piano the number of choices of music that have become available to me are unimaginable.
I can play anything from the classics to today's pop songs on the radio.
I have a beautiful grand piano sitting in my living room.
Because of this I can treat my friends and family to the classic oldies whenever I want to feel accomplished.
I have even gone so far as to write some of my own music.
That beautiful instrument with its magnificent sounds, there is no other sound that is so recognizable than that of the piano.
If you think back to the days of Beethoven and Mozart, most of the music was written and performed on the piano.
Although I had heard of these musicians at the time that I was learning how to play the piano, I didn't really take any notice.
I wasn't really interested in the fact that these acclaimed authors of the classics we now hear everyday had at one time taken on the task of learning the piano, nor did I care for the music which they were creating.
However, as my age increases, I find myself becoming more and more captivated by such classics and this is due to the fact that I am able appreciate the piano now that I have learned its art.
Now, I actually want to be able to bring their music back to life.
Like me, my children were horrified when I told them that I would like them to select an instrument to learn.
They kept asking, "Why?", "Why do we have to learn an instrument?" Whenever asked I would calmly explain that I, like them had to learn the piano at one point, and over the years I have realized that there is no better way to appreciate music than being able to play it yourself.
Although at the moment they do not want to understand, there will come a time when they will thank me for making them take an interest in music and that of playing an instrument.
If you are debating whether or not to learn the piano, remember that only when you have reached your goals will you be able to fully appreciate the value that music plays in a person's life.
