How to File a 1040A

    • 1). Write your personal information in the appropriate boxes including name, Social Security number and address.

    • 2). Select your filing status.

    • 3). Fill out the “Exemptions” section with all applicable information, adding the totals in the right hand columns in Box 6d.

    • 4). Fill in the “Income” section from your W-2s or 1099s, totaling boxes 7 through 14b and writing it in box 15.

    • 5). Follow the instructions given in the 1040A Instructions booklet on pages 30 to 33 to fill out “Adjusted gross income” in boxes 16 through 20 to calculate the amount for box 21 (see References).

    • 6). Follow the instructions given in the 1040A Instructions booklet on pages 33 to 65 to fill out “Tax, credits, and payments” in boxes 22 through 43, totaling them in box 44 (see References).

    • 7). If box 44 determines you are due a refund, fill in the “Refund” section with your direct deposit information. If you owe taxes, fill out the “Amount you owe” section and refer to page 66 of the 1040A Instructions booklet for how to pay the IRS (see References).

    • 8). Sign the “Sign here” box. Have your spouse sign as well, if applicable.

    • 9). Mail your 1040A tax form along with copies of your W2 and other pertinent documentation to the appropriate address listed on page 92 of the 1040A Instructions booklet (see References).
