Playdough Hair

There are several tools you probably have around the house that you can use to make playdough hair. Be sure to offer constant supervision to children under 3 years of age when using these tools.

First start by purchasing or making your own playdough, then roll into a ball and:
  • Press through a mesh sieve with the back of a spoon. The finer the mesh, the finer the hair.
  • Press through a garlic press.
  • Press through a potato ricer.

  • Manually roll tiny balls into long strands of hair, just like making snakes.
  • Load a pastry bag and pass it through a tip with small holes.
  • Roll a piece flat and then use safety scissors to cut strips of hair.
  • Use a metal spoon with holes to press against the playdough on a tray or table. There are adult-sized versions that will work or there's a line of utensils from Sassy with metal spoons and forks that have holes that would do the job.
  • Press through a colander with the back of a spoon or the bottom of a cup. Some colanders have holes in different shapes (squares, circles, ovals) so try different types.
  • Press through the lid of a flour duster.
  • Press through the holes of an extra large button.
  • Mash through a metal steamer basket.
  • Place in a bowl and mash with a potato masher.
  • Press through the lid of a gravy separator. It conveniently stores all the hair pieces for you, too.
  • Roll into flat pieces and cut with a plastic pizza cutter toy.
  • Press through the lid of a spice shaker. The kind used for red pepper flakes or Parmesan cheese both work great.
  • Place a large piece on a tray or table and press a pizza pan with holes on top of it.
