- 1). Verify your citizenship.
You are a US citizen and registered with the Selective Services (if male and born after 12/31/1959). - 2). Examine the reason you lost your job.
You lost your job to causes that were not due to your fault or decision. Examples are lack of work due to local economic conditions, company closure, lay off, or natural disaster. - 3). Obtain proof that you were laid off.
If you were fired or quit your last job, you are not eligible. However, if you can prove that you left your place of employment for "good causes" you may still be able to collect benefits. File a claim with the state unemployment office; if you are denied, you will be entitled to a hearing and a chance to plead your case. - 4). Start your mandatory job search.
In order to receive unemployment benefits, you must be willing to start an active search for work. You will need to document applications to at least three jobs a week and be available and ready to work should a suitable job be offered.
