Do-it-Yourself Tile Backsplashes for Kitchens

    • 1). Mark out the border you want for your backsplash on the wall, using your level and pencil. Make it a size that will allow use of all full tiles with no cuts.

    • 2). Spread tile adhesive over the whole marked out area, using a notched trowel.

    • 3). Press the lowest row of standard tiles into place in the adhesive, setting them side by side and spanning across the bottom of the marked-out area. Put tile spacers between the tiles and below them, to separate them from the countertop.

    • 4). Hang the second course of tiles above the first, again setting spacers all around. Work your way up the space, course by course. Cover the whole area.

    • 5). Spread adhesive on the back of one trim tile, using your trowel. Press it to the wall next to the tiled area, with spacers next to it.

    • 6). Repeat for the rest of the trim tile, hanging them one by one around the whole border of the backsplash, putting spacers between all of them. Let the adhesive set for 10 to 12 hours and remove the spacers.

    • 7). Spread grout over the backsplash with a grout float, forcing it into the joints between the tiles. Use a damp sponge to wipe up the excess grout. Let the grout set for 24 hours.

    • 8). Run a bead of caulk along the base of the backsplash to seal it with the countertop.
