What Is Magnesium Gluconate?

    Magnesium

    • Magnesium is found naturally in many foods and absorbed into the blood during digestion. People on medications that deplete magnesium or those with gastrointestinal disorders affecting absorption are often prescribed a magnesium supplement.

    Gluconate

    • Gluconate is a salt byproduct created by oxidizing glucose molecules. These or other salts are mixed with nutrients such as magnesium to make them more available for absorption into the bloodstream.

    Foods

    • High levels of magnesium are in fish, fruits and grains, among other foods (see Resources). A dietary change to include these foods sometimes is all that's needed to fortify magnesium levels in the blood without supplements.

    Warnings

    • Tell your doctor about any allergies, current medications or renal issues you have had in the past. This will help her set the proper dose without causing complications to your existing conditions.

    Child Birth

    • Always mention to a doctor if you are pregnant or have plans to become pregnant before setting a dosage for magnesium gluconate supplements. High levels of magnesium can be passed to a fetus through the bloodstream or to an infant through breast milk.
