- 1). Read the instructions carefully for the experiment you want to conduct. The experiments include constructing a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton model; an astronomy lab, making an Earth and moon model; constructing and using a microscope; home meteorology; building and erupting a volcano; and growing a crystal. The instructions are on the color poster and in the instruction manual. If you have lost the manual, you can download it from the Discover This website. The instruction manual also gives educational background information pertaining to the purpose of each experiment.
- 2). Clear a space to set up your laboratory work station. If it's a dry day, you can complete some experiments outside to avoid any mess, mishaps and spills indoors.
- 3). Gather the items you will need for your specific experiment. Leave any items you do not need in the box. For example, for the crystal growing lab you will need your molded laboratory station with its crystal growing cup, safety goggles, bag of crystal growing chemicals, base rocks, the measuring cup and the stirring stick.
- 4). Gather any items you will need that are not included in the kit. In the case of the crystal growing lab you will also need a stainless steel or non-stick saucepan, newspapers or plastic sheeting to protect your work area from spills, paper towels for drying crystals and cleaning spills, and a flashlight.
- 5). Put the safety goggles on and conduct the experiment, following the instructions closely. The crystal growing experiment involves dissolving the crystal growing chemicals in boiling water. It is essential that an adult supervises.
- 6). Write a report on your experiment and the results in the record log in the instruction manual or in your own experiments log.
