Everyday Skin Care

Skin cancer is a serious condition and is a growing problem.
There are over 1 million new cases of skin cancers annually in the United States.
The media has provided a tremendous amount of information regarding the dangers of skin cancer as well as preventative measures that you can take to avoid getting it.
But even with all of the information it appears that the rate of skin cancer continues to rise.
Protection from Skin Cancer: There are various things you can do to protect yourself from skin cancer.
Avoid processed food: Heavily processed foods over time can weaken your immune system making you susceptible to disease.
There are certain foods you should add to your diet that are high in antioxidants that protect you from free radical damage from the sun.
Eat a diet rich in fresh vegetables and fruits, lean proteins and whole grains.
Omega-3 fish, red and orange vegetables, greens and cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli are all very high in antioxidants.
Sufficient sleep: Your body needs adequate sleep to stay healthy.
Current research indicates that getting adequate sleep on a regular basis can help prevent disease from developing.
Sleep is healthy and strengthens the immune system.
Sunscreen: There is growing controversy regarding the use of sunscreens to prevent skin cancer.
The best recommendation is to follow the advice of your medical practitioner or dermatologist.
However there is a growing amount of research that is questioning the chemicals that many of these sunscreens contain.
The research is pointing to the rise in skin cancer in nations where sunscreen is the most heavily used.
Although not conclusive it is something for you to consider.
Any chemicals that you apply to your skin will be absorbed.
Skin is the body's largest organ and if you continually apply chemicals to your skin you may develop some harmful side effects over time.
There are several ingredients that are commonly found in sunscreens that have come into question.
These include the following: PABA, benzophenone-3 and octocrylene.
The research studies were conducted on animals and therefore there is no conclusive proof that these ingredients promote skin cancer.
However it is good to be aware of the chemicals in these products.
You can always look for natural sunscreen products that do not contain chemicals but offer the same level of protection for your skin.
Get adequate sunlight: You hear a lot of information saying you should completely avoid the sun.
You need a certain amount of sunlight daily for your health.
This is because sunlight lets the body produce vitamin d which is required by every organ in the human body for good health.
Unfortunately many people are deficient in vitamin d.
Perhaps there is a connection to the fear many people have of getting any sunlight at all.
Definitely never burn your skin as this is extremely dangerous.
When to be in the sun: There are certain times of the day that are best to get sun exposure.
Also you should always wear protective clothing such as long sleeves and a hat.
You should avoid the sun during the hours of 11 to 3 pm when the UV rays are the highest and most dangerous.
SPF Levels: A SPF level of at least 30 should be used daily.
When you are spending more than an hour outdoors make sure to reapply the sunscreen.
If you spend a lot of time driving you should also reapply sunscreen as the intense heat of the sun can be harmful.
The glass windows only block UVB rays but not UVA rays so sunscreen is very important.
Avoid Tanning Salons: There is growing controversy over the safety of tanning salons.
The manufacturers state that tanning beds are safe because it produces UVA rays and not UVB rays.
However, UVA rays can penetrate the skin as well and therefore may increase your risk of skin cancer.
Additionally too much usage of tanning beds can eventually lead to dry and wrinkled skin.
Additional Tips: You should take sun protection very seriously.
Many people do not care about protecting their skin from the sun and often will burn or overexpose themselves, increasing their risk of skin cancer.
Sunscreens have a shelf life of three years.
Lip protection: your lips need protection from the sun as well.
You can use a lip balm that contains sunscreen or smooth a little of your regular sunscreen over your lips as well.
If you are a bald or balding man, you need to protect your scalp from the sun as well by applying sunscreen to your head.
