The summer time gives older children the opportunity to have fun and make a little money as well. Students are able to learn some responsibility and how to manage money by getting a job over the summer. A part-time job will also leave just enough time for enjoyable activities. - Many people go on vacation during the summer and run back and forth between several activities and events. This means they don't have time or patience for lawn care. First inquire with neighbors and friends about whether they desire lawn care service. If you don't get enough work from this, begin visiting homes in the neighborhood within a few blocks of home. This will require a few hours of work per yard, but can provide an average $30 in return for standard lawns.
- Young people find significant success babysitting during the summer. This is an opportunity for her to earn some money and gives hard-working parents a chance to go out with other adults. If your child is in daycare, this will give them a break from daycare to stay home with a babysitter. Also, high school students may help younger children with homework if your child is in summer school or having trouble with a specific subject and needs tutoring.
- The pools all open for summer break, so teens who are trained in water rescue often work as lifeguards. Most pools have two lifeguards on duty at a time, and often provide the training for their employees. Teens can get a nice tan while earning some extra cash.
- Malls and department stores are often looking for extra help during the summer. Many smaller stores in malls and shopping strips will hire teens ages 16 and up to work in the stores. This is often simple work, but requires some evidence of maturity and an understanding of responsibility. These positions include stocking new merchandise to running the cash register.
- For older teens who will graduate soon, an internship is the key to their future. This may be a paid or unpaid position, but could benefit the teen in their future career. Look for something you are interested in that falls into the category of your career goals. Work with your guidance counselors before the end of the year for the right fit for you.
