  Benazepril is the generic name for the drug Amlod/Benazp, which is a treatment for high blood pressure (hypertension). Hypertension adds undue stress to the heart muscle by causing restriction of the blood vessels leading to vital organs such as the heart, brain and kidneys. Benazepril aids the body in reducing this restriction by blocking certain enzymes, thus allowing the blood freedom to flow throughout the organs. This drug does not cure hypertension, but it can help control it. There can be side effects when taking this drug, however, especially if it is taken with grapefruit or grapefruit juice. Grapefruit can worsen certain side effects of Benazepril.

  Common side effects of Benazepril include headache, dry cough, dizziness and swelling of the hands, feet or ankles.   Chest pain, persistent sore throat, stomach pain and yellowing of the eyes are only a few of the more severe side effects of Benazepril. Contact your doctor immediately if any of these occur.
