- 1). Take math, science, shop and electronics classes while still in high school or as continuing education. Although some of these classes are not required, they will make your professional training classes easier.
- 2). Complete a program in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) at a technical school or junior college. These programs vary in length and are usually completed within 6 months to 2 years.
- 3). Work with experienced technicians for 6 months to 2 years after graduation to become proficient in air conditioning maintenance.
- 4). Train through an apprenticeship as an alternative to post-secondary school. Apprenticeships can last from 3 to 5 years and involve some classroom instruction as well as field work.
- 5). Obtain a license if your state requires one. Check with your local government to see what is required. Get certified to work with refrigerants. The Environmental Protection Agency administers the test for certification.
