I've decided to christen July, Mandela Month because while I was searching online for fun things to do around Cape Town, two very interesting things came up, both of which revolve around our former President and who many of us affectionately call, Madiba.
First up, from July 1st to November 22nd there will be an exhibition at the SA Jewish Museum, of cartoons done by Johnathan Shapiro on the life and contributions of Madiba. Shapiro is well known worldwide for his humorous yet controversial depictions of political and current news events. He has come under fire many times by various political parties and religious groups for his satirical depictions, however this has not deterred him from carrying on to keep South Africans entertained with his cartoons.
Secondly, on July 21st and 22nd there is an Opera at the Artscape Opera House, called Mandela Trilogy which is dedicated to the incredible life which Nelson Mandela has lived and is free to anyone with a Lotto ticket. This productions entire cast of 40 members are all South African and features an award winning performer, Gloria Bosman, in a leading role. The Opera focuses on 3 key periods in Mandela's life, all of which have very distinctly different musical styles, composed by Michael Williams.
I for one will be eager to see both the exhibit and the production, not just because I'm South African and the thought of my country without Madiba one day, makes me feel somewhat depressed, but also because this man has led and extraordinary life, all of which the majority of us have no idea about, so I think this will be an educational experience, whether you are South African or not.
For those of you who enjoy being out in nature while at the same time expending some energy, you will be spoiled for choice in Cape Town. I wasn't totally aware of how spoiled I was in this regard because although I am grateful that I live in one of the most beautiful cities in [http://www.havethelastword.co.za/]
Have you ever fancied learning how to play a (or for some of us, another) musical instrument? If the answer is yes but you just aren't sure which one, then I'd say what about the Marimba? Bishops School is hosting an amaAmbush Marimba Course from the 9th to the 14th of July. You don't need [http://www.havethelastword.co.za/]
