We want to help our children with their maths so we go onto the computer and find some times tables worksheets.
They now have some work to do and we feel better that they are working and learning.
It does ask the question though if this is an efficient way of a child learning their times tables.
Although it always feels better that you have done something proactive to help your child learn their times tables.
You feel reassured as a parent you have done the right thing. Or do you?
If only it was so simple. What if your child is learning their times tables but it is putting them off maths. Filling out times tables worksheets is not exactly fun.
Writing out times tables is renowned for being a slow process. Worksheets could hinder the process of learning as they are so time consuming.
As a result, they learn slowly but more importantly they are not learning to think quickly and get the tables correct instantly.
What your children need is a method which gives them the answers to the times tables in an instant. Not convinced? What if your children took as long to give someone their name as it took to write it because that's how long it took them to work out the answer?
You wouldn't expect your child to write their name on a piece of paper each time you asked them your name. Therefore children could be in a position to recite their times tables without pouring over worksheets for long hours.
Speaking out loud is obviously a quicker process than writing. If your child was able to think quickly this in turn would prove more fun for them.
'Speak to Learn' is a strong motto and one that I believe in. To learn his or her times tables your child needs to be able to speak not write.
So to return to times tables worksheets. Times tables worksheets are helpful. However, it is the way that they are being used which is unhelpful.
