- Although individuals may not share a common spoken language, body language and movements are typically the same across most cultures. When communicating across a language barrier, try using body movements to get the point across. For instance, if you are looking for a restaurant, try acting as though you are eating and shrugging your shoulders as if to say, "Do you know of anywhere to eat?" An individual may respond by pointing in a specific direction, or shaking his head. Tailor your physical movements to match the specific situation.
- Visual communication can replace verbal communication. In most any situation, drawing a picture to communicate can be effective. A cow in the United States looks just like a cow in Mexico. Besides asking questions or communicating ideas, drawings can also be helpful in gathering directional information through the creation of basic maps.
- Whether or not it is obvious, some languages share words, or have similar sounding words, for the same items. While communicating through a language barrier, try verbally expressing your needs using key words that the other individual may understand. Combine the use of words with body language, or a drawing, to better the chances of the individual that you are communicating with fully understanding you.
- Watch for both verbal and nonverbal feedback from the individual that you are communicating with. Although you may not be able to understand her verbal responses, paying attention to facial expressions and gestures can help you recognize whether or not you have effectively communicated. For instance, a blank stare or shaking head may indicate that the other party is confused. Conversely, a smile and nodding may indicate that you understand one another.
- Find an individual who is capable of speaking both languages involved to act as a third party translator. Tell the translator exactly what you would like said, and wait for the response from the other party. Be patient with the translator and make your communications clear so he is able to effectively relay your message.
