- Like most states, Kansas requires minimum liability auto insurance for all drivers, which covers the policy holder if his vehicle causes injury to another driver or passenger on the road or property damage. Kansas drivers are required by law to carry 25/50/10 liability, which protects the policy holder for up to $25,000 in damages if one person is injured or killed, $50,000 if more than one person is injured or killed and $10,000 in property damage coverage.
- As of 2010, Kansas is one of only 16 states in the country to require PIP, or personal injury protection auto insurance. Also known as no fault insurance, PIP comes into play if the policy holder or any of his passengers are injured and will help pay for any medical expenses, lost wages and funeral costs that accrue as a result of an accident, regardless of which driver was at fault. Drivers must purchase a PIP policy that covers a minimum of $4,500 in personal medical expenses, $900 per month for 1 year in lost wages due to disability, $25 per day for in-home services, $2,000 for funeral expenses and $4,500 in rehabilitation expenses.
- Like PIP auto insurance, uninsured or underinsured motorist protection is not required by every state, but as of 2010, Kansas is one of 21 states that mandates coverage. A type of auto insurance that covers the policy holder and his family from in-car or pedestrian accidents, uninsured and underinsured motorist protection works like PIP, but additionally covers any court or medical expenses that cannot be covered by the other driver due to his lack of adequate auto insurance coverage. Kansas drivers are required to carry a minimum of $25,000 to cover the costs of injuries to one person and $50,000 to cover any cumulative damages resulting from a single accident.
- While they are not required by the state, comprehensive and collision auto insurance are offered by Kansas auto insurers as part of a full auto insurance package. Comprehensive covers the costs if the policy holder's vehicle is damaged due to natural disaster or theft, and collision helps pay for any additional vehicle repairs after an accident.
