When I moved into my new house, I bought inexpensive furniture for the grandkids' playroom. Last week the two 8-year-old granddaughters were playing there when I heard screams and a commotion. They had been searching for art supplies and had pulled out all the drawers in the chest, at which point it toppled forward. The bottom drawer kept it from toppling all the way over, so the grands were frightened but not hurt.
Still, I thought I should share my experience and some information about furniture tipover dangers from the Guide to Baby Products, Heather Corley. Heather writes that falling furniture is responsible for a significant number of child deaths. Chests, bookcases and TV sets are among the most dangerous items. Heather also warns that parents should be extra vigilant when children are visiting friends or grandparents. In households without small children, the homeowners may have looked at the mounting brackets or anchoring devices that came with their furniture or appliances and tossed them in a drawer.
That's where I found the anchoring device that came with my chest-of-drawers.
