If you enjoy watching movies at home, as much as I do, you might consider converting your living room into a part-time cinema setting. I watch television or movies in my living room: Why not turn my room into a comfortable atmosphere with a large, flat screen television, surround sound system, soft lighting, and comfy seating?
I will save money by not standing in long lines for theatre tickets, driving in inclement weather, not to mention, saving on gasoline. There is the added convenience of being able to pause your movie at home for the kid's potty breaks, or bringing more snacks from the kitchen.
First Step
I first checked my room, to be assured I could completely block window light with blackout shades, and then pull my curtains completely over the darkening shades.
Get comfortable
I checked my furniture for comfort, and decided I needed two large floor pillows for movie watching. Then I decided that rope lights, in a soft colour, would be great attached to the perimeter of the room's baseboards, providing a softly lit room.
Now, the equipment that will be needed for my home cinema: A large flat screen television, either wall-hung, or on a stand.
A DVD player: Any type can be used, but a portable player would be most convenient.
An AV receiver or amplifier: 5.1 Channels.
Cables: Video cables and a coaxial digital audio cable.
Speakers: One to be placed either below or above the centre of the television screen. Two speakers for the front of the room, one on the right; the other on the left. Two speakers for the back of the room.
To be placed on the right and the left. A woofer, bass speaker, placed toward the rear of the room where the bass tones seem the best. Be certain the speakers are placed, with all of them at the same level, for the best audio. If help is needed for connecting wires and cables, there are several on-line how-to-sites for help, or do as I did: Ask the salesperson where I purchased my materials to demonstrate how the equipment is connected. They are there to help with questions, and should gladly do so.
With all cables and wires attached, then checked, making certain they worked properly, I closed the drapes, kicked back in my chair, started my favourite DVD, in my new living room cinema. You can do the same. Don't forget the popcorn!
