Are you considering a high end bathroom remodeling project?  Do you expect nothing but the best? Well, you may be in for a rude awakening and may find it hard to believe but actually most of the bathroom cabinets you see advertised as ‘high end' are actually not custom made. It is really expensive to custom design and manufacture a full bathroom and most companies let you choose from ‘lines'. Â
This is the first give away that you are not really getting the high end customer designed bathroom you envisioned. A real high end shop will work with you to first and foremost understand what you are requiring and then design the bathroom cabinets to your need. Most of the shops have lines because this way they can pre-order pre-manufactured components and just assemble the final bathroom. This means that the workmanship is most likely being done in Asia. There is nothing really wrong with Asian work, however the work is for the very large part not high end. The wood or composite wood used is not dried to the
same strict standards that North American custom shops come to expect and very frequently ends up shifting and bending after installation. Of course by choosing ‘lines' of products you will never really match the design perfectly into your décor. You can just get something that matches the closest and of course that does not inspire the high end custom bathroom feel that the top customers come to expect. Â
Furthermore, most bathroom manufacturers lack the design experience that is associated with someone who does the full end-to-end design. This means details, such as molding selections matching the rest of the decor, custom finishes, high end hardware and finally real professional installation. Because pre-designed cabinets do not take into account the space in which they will be installed, the final product will never be as well fitted as something that is 100% custom, and designed with the available space in mind.
That being said, when selecting a high end design shop keep these things in mind:
1)Â Â Â Can I work with the bathroom designer to really design something 100% custom or will they steer me to towards pre-defined selections?
2)   Will they ask me about the décor of the house and take the time to understand the flow of the home design and how it integrated with the bathroom?
3)Â Â Â Will they show me the manufacturing process of the individual components?
4)Â Â Â Will they allow me to discuss the wood, materials, hardware and present me with finish samples custom made to my requirements?
If the answer to any of the above is ‘no' then you know the shop you are working with is not really interested in providing high end customer bathroom cabinets and is rather a glorified store with pre-made models.
