A practice manager manages group medical practices, which are normally groups of three or more doctors who share personnel, facilities and business management.
A bachelor's degree is usually required for this job position, and some prior management experience may be required since the practice manager manages the entire physician practice. - The main responsibility of a practice manager is to manage the staff of the office he works in. Staff could include registered nurses, licensed nurses, receptionists and medical assistants. As a part of his management responsibilities, he interviews and hires new employees, takes over orientation and training for new employees, develops and maintains education programs for staff, keeps track of payroll records, develops policies for all staff to follow, maintains a strong line of communication between them and physicians within the practice, and evaluates the performance of staff and sets standards for all staff to follow.
- A practice manager is also responsible for developing a schedule for her staff and oversees the scheduling of patients, to be sure that the physicians are able to see the patients at the times they are scheduled to be seen. She also makes sure that there are enough rooms available for the number of patients scheduled at each time slot, and assigns each physician to specific rooms for that day of operation.
- A practice manager is responsible for monitoring budget reports, revenue, and all other financial issues that may arise. He may work with the business office for his practice to monitor financial issues within the business. He may handle insurance payments or handle issues with patients that are behind on payments for services.
- A large responsibility of a practice manager is to maintain full confidentiality. Because he is involved with patients and has access to their personal information, he needs to keep all information confidential unless given written permission by the patient to release any information.
