Protect Your Furniture From Pests

I think sitting down on an amazing piece of furniture with the feel of warm red wine going down your throat on a cool fall evening is amazing, till a spider crawls up your arm because it made a nest in your chair.
Or how about sitting down with a hot cup of coffee first thing on a Sunday morning and then there's a race of ants coming out of the seat.
Insects can ruin you day, your morning, afternoon, evening, doesn't matter what time, the last thing you want when you sit down to relax is to be interrupted by uninvited guests!! It just gives you that creepy crawly feeling all over, the one where your arm hairs stick straight up, no one wants that! The first thing that needs to be done to keep furniture from becoming infested is to keep it maintained and clean.
Also, the less you are out there using it the more likely bugs will make it their home; if you only go out and enjoy your furniture once a month then that gives insects 29 days a month to make it theirs.
Some woods just naturally protect from infestations like, Ipe, teak and cedar, if your furniture is made from these natural materials you may be lucky to never have a bug problem.
If not then try some homemade techniques to keep the bugs away.
Here are two funny easy house hold tricks you can do to help keep insect infestations to a minimum with outdoor wood furniture; one uses dryer sheets and the other vinegar.
For the dryer sheet method, this one is good for winter, when your furniture are under tarps or in the garage, a perfect place for bees, ants, and other insects to make nests for the cold season.
Dryer sheets smell wonderful to us, they take out our static and smell great, but not to them, most insects cannot stand the smell of dryer sheets, so while your furniture is put away for the season, keep a few sheets with it.
The vinegar method, this is a good one, everyone has their own feelings about vinegar, some use it in recipes and others only look at it as a cleaning agent, but insects loath the smell of it.
Perfect, as most of us tend to keep vinegar around at all times, but apple cider vinegar will work best here.
With the vinegar there are a few options, one mix in a spray bottle ½ part water and ½ part vinegar and spray the area, not the furniture.
The problem with this is that once the mix evaporates and the smell dies down it will no longer work.
A better more lasting effect is to fill a bowl with the vinegar, remember apple cider works best, and leave it in the vicinity of the wood furniture.
The smell will be so strong I will be surprised if you get unwelcome visitors.
But if the smell is too strong for you when you are out, just put it aside while you enjoy your outdoor living and bring it back out when you head in for the night.
Hopefully these tricks work to keep your furniture yours, not theirs!
