Shower Ceramic Tile Installation

    • 1). Prepare the walls for the ceramic tiles. Measure the walls where the tiles will be installed. Mark the measurements on several sheets of cement board. Cut the cement board using a jigsaw with a carbide-tipped blade. Screw the cement board directly to the wall studs. Cover the seams between the pieces of cement board with fiberglass mesh tape and thin-set mortar. Allow it to dry overnight.

    • 2). Mark the layout on the walls using a level. If you are not sure what type of layout you want, position the tiles on the floor. Place tile spacers between the tiles. When you determine your layout, transfer the measurements to the wall. Mark a line on the wall where you will start the installation.

    • 3). Apply the tile adhesive on the wall with a notched trowel. Begin at the marked starting line on the wall. Start at the bottom of the wall. This will keep the tiles from sliding before the tile adhesive can dry.

    • 4). Push the ceramic tiles onto the tile adhesive. Slip a tile spacer between each of the ceramic tiles. Cut the tiles to fit with a tile saw. Allow it to dry overnight.

    • 5). Pull the tile spacers from the wall. Apply the grout with a rubber or foam grout float. Hold the float at a 45-degree angle while you move it over the tiled wall. Fill all of the tile joints with grout. Remove the excess grout from the top of the ceramic tiles with a slightly wet grout sponge. Let the shower walls dry for 24 hours before use.
