How to Re-Face Kitchen Cabinets

    • 1). Remove the cabinet doors from the cabinets with a screwdriver. Remove the hinges and the door pull handle from the cabinet doors and set the doors aside.

    • 2). Sand the old finish off of the cabinet doors with a small sander. Use pieces of sandpaper and sand the door edges by hand so that you do not accidentally round off any carved portions of the cabinet doors.

    • 3). Fill in any holes or cracks by applying wood putty with a putty knife. Apply the wood putty in the direction of the grain and allow the putty to dry.

    • 4). Lay the veneer flat on the floor or other flat surface. Measure one of the cabinet sides with a tape measure and add ¼ inch to each measurement. Transfer the measurement to the veneer and cut the veneer with a utility knife.

    • 5). Flip the cut piece of veneer over and tear off the paper backing. If the veneer you have does not have paper backing, apply the appropriate glue suggested with your product. Carefully attach the veneer to the upper left corner of the side you are working on, and then press the veneer firmly against the side. Roll a wallpaper roller across the veneer starting at the top to remove all air bubbles. Repeat the measuring, cutting and application steps for all of the cabinet sides.

    • 6). Trim the veneer excess with a utility knife to match the cabinet. If necessary, sand down the edges after trimming. Measure the front vertical frame and add ¼ inch to the measurement. Transfer the measurement to the veneer. Cut the veneer according to your measurements and attach the veneer to the front vertical frame of the cabinet. Trim away the excess even with the cabinet.

    • 7). Measure the front horizontal frames and transfer the measurement to the veneer. Cut the veneer according to the measurement and attach the veneer to the horizontal frame. Roll over all of the veneer with the wallpaper roller as you attach the veneer to the cabinet.

    • 8). Sand any wood putty on the cabinet doors until the door is smooth. Wipe the doors down with a damp wash cloth to remove any sand debris. Stain the cabinet doors as desired with a quality stain and paintbrush. Allow the stain to dry completely before attaching the cabinet door hardware.

    • 9). Lay the cabinet doors on a flat surface to install the hinges. If the hinges will be seen, have the face of the cabinet door facing you. For hinges that will be hidden, lay the door on its face so the back of the door is facing you.

    • 10

Line up the top of the top hinges 2 inches from the top of the door and mark the attaching holes to the door with a pencil. The bottom of the bottom hinge will be 2 inches from the bottom of the door. Drill pilot holes for your hinge screws and attach the hinges to the door with the retaining screws.

    • 11

Hold the door over a cabinet opening so that the door overlaps evenly on all four sides. Place a torpedo level on the top of the door to check the levelness of the door. Mark the holes for the hinges onto the cabinet with a pencil.

    • 12

Make pre-drill holes for your hinge screws but do not drill all the way through the cabinet. Line your cabinet door up against the cabinet and secure the door with the retaining screws through the hinges.

    • 13

Hang all your doors and keep the top of the doors even all the way across the cabinet. Attach the new door handles to the doors.
