Do it Yourself: How to Knockdown Drywall

    • 1). Unscrew the face plates of electrical outlets and switches using a standard screwdriver.

    • 2). Locate the studs on the wall being knocked down using a stud finder. Stud finders are different, so follow your manufacturer's directions. Mark the locations of both edges of the studs using a pencil. Make a pencil mark at the top and the bottom of each stud. Knowing the location of both edges of each stud will allow you to remove the drywall in larger pieces, which will make the job easier.

    • 3). Draw a line connecting the top and bottom pencil marks for each edge of each stud using an 8 foot 2-by-4 to keep the lines straight. When you are finished you will have two vertical parallel lines for each stud showing where the edge of each one is located.

    • 4). Insert a punch saw at the top, outside edge of one of the lines and saw along the line all the way to the bottom. Repeat this procedure for the edge line of the next stud.

    • 5). Cut a horizontal line across the top and bottom and remove the entire piece of drywall between the two studs. Repeat this procedure until the sheets of drywall between all the studs of the wall being knocked down are removed.

    • 6). Pry the bits of drywall off the surface of the studs using a pry-bar. For drywall that was originally secured with screws, use an electric drill with a driver bit installed to back-out the screws. Pry nails out of the studs using the pry-bar and make sure all bits of drywall are off the studs.
