The glorious history of India's Carpet industry has its root buried deep in the cities of Bhadohi, Mirzapur, and Varanasi in southeast Uttar Pradesh and a few cities lying hundred kilometers away, around the three-city area of Shahjahanpur, Badaun, and Hardoi. Kashmir is also amongst the major centers of carpet manufacturers in India. Though, this art is no more isolated to villages or small towns, when it comes to trade! It has successfully spread its wings to reach the international markets.

The 90% of carpet production in India is done in the Bhadohi, Varanasi and Mirzapur areas of Utter Pradesh. There are majorly five types of handmade carpets produced in India depending upon their methods of production.
Hand Woven carpets are rather a broad category that comprise flat weave carpets and hand knotted carpets. Cotton and wool durries and Kilims that falls under the category of Flat weave carpet. These types of carpets have a very strong cultural heritage base. In fact, Durries weaving was part of every household, few years back. Traditional Persian carpets are one of the most renowned knotted carpets. The tight weaves and intense knotting determines the neatness and stability of different patterns. In fact, the quality of these carpets is judged by the tightness of the weaves and knots. Wool Carpet, polypropylene BCF carpet, nylon Carpet, polypropylene Heat set carpet, viscose Carpet, acrylic Carpet, etc. are various kinds of woven carpets.
Hand tufted carpets have their pile inserted into a support material with the aid of tufting gun, which is itself then tied to a secondary backing cloth with the application of latex solution to give solidity. Then third support cloth is used & finishing is done. These carpets can be created either with loop pile or cut pile.
The last category of carpets is of hand knotted carpets that were introduced to Indian artisans quite late. The Mughals brought the fashion of hand knotted carpets to India and the craftsmen were backed by the ruling class for quite a while. These carpets had quite a rich appeal and the patterns followed were Persian and Turkish that gradually got indianized. It was not difficult for Indian craftsmen to adopt these patterns as they resembled Indian tribal designs. The Persian patterns are mostly practiced in Kashmir, where the finest quality and wool are available. The ones available with kashmere art are also known as Pure Silk Carpets.
